TRIAL, my sophomore EP, Out 10/23

"I was just a kid who was put on trial"

New EP and new lyric videos (just for you)

Hey beautiful people,

We all move through betrayal, pain, self-defense, and survival. At times, my life has felt like a trial. Yours probably has too.

Over the past 3 years, I have spent so many hours writing, recording and producing music. For some reason, I kept listening to some of the songs on loop, and it felt like going through the different phases of a trial… With charging documents, pretrial motions, verdict forms and a final court order.
It seems bit abstract… Until life shows us that it actually isn’t.

Over time, I realized that those songs weren’t about love or heartbreak, which was the bulk of what I was writing about at the time.
The contrast between “struggling with love,” which I explore on my first EP, and “struggling with life” became fascinating to me.

I’m so grateful to all of my collaborators, and so proud of what these songs became, and of how authentic this music is.

I was scared to share some of these lyrics, but just like these songs belong together, they belong to you.

I first wrote PUZZLE PIECE as a ballad. Just thinking about the idea of someone feeling like they are the last missing piece in your life. That kind of love where everything feels complete. Until you lose it.

I thought it was the saddest song I’d ever written. Then my co-writer, Mike Ales, came up with this wild melody and it cracked the song open. We let it become bigger. Louder. More urgent…. Like life. Like having loved someone who felt like home. And having gone through everything just to see it not work out.

I found EVERYBODY BLEEDS as a 14-year-old demo, during a time I was obsessing over my own struggles. Recording it gave me a lot of perspective. Music has been there through my toughest times, as well as the happiest moments. I hope my music can do the same for someone else, whether it offers comfort, reflection, or any other feeling. If there is one thing that ties us all together, it’s the downs of life, isn’t it?
I was really feeling it when I recorded this song, and I had been multitasking and emailing my cinematographer back and forth while my producer, Michael Carey, was recording some of the guitars. So when I got up to sing, I thought, well, let me record this.
The song was so engraved in me that I think I only recorded the verses once and that was it. Sometimes you can’t overthink it.
